Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease commonly experienced by geriatric patients and is often accompanied by the use of various medications (polypharmacy). This condition increases the risk of Potentially Inappropriate Medications (PIMs) which have a negative impact on the safety of elderly patients. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the number of drug prescriptions and the incidence of PIMs based on the Beers Criteria 2023 in geriatric patients with Diabetes Mellitus at Tunas Harapan Islamic Hospital in Salatiga using an observational analytical design with a retrospective approach. Data were obtained from medical records of geriatric patients with Diabetes Mellitus for the period January–December 2025. The sampling technique used a total sampling of 47 patients. Identification of PIMs used the Beers Criteria 2023 guide. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and analytically to determine the relationship between the number of drug prescriptions and the incidence of PIMs. The results showed that 25 patients (53.2%) received more than five types of drugs. PIMs were found in 43 prescriptions (91.5%), with the most common PIM category based on the 2023 Beers Criteria being in category 1 (75.3%). Statistical test results showed no significant relationship between the number of drug prescriptions and the incidence of PIMs (p-value = 0.237; p > 0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between the number of drug prescriptions and the incidence of PIMs in geriatric patients with Diabetes Mellitus based on the 2023 Beers Criteria.
